A Brief History of Belsize Park

Belsize Park was developed from the 1850s onwards on land that had previously been the manor of Belsize, a country estate north of Camden. The bulk of the housing dates from the 1850s to the 1880s, and consists of substantial Italianate stucco-fronted villas and tall terraces designed for the prosperous Victorian upper middle class. Many of the larger houses were converted into flats and apartments in the inter-war and post-war periods, and the area developed a slightly bohemian, intellectual reputation in the mid-twentieth century.
