Primrose Hill — the hill itself — was acquired by the Crown in 1841 as a public open space, and the streets around it were developed in the 1840s and 1850s as a mid-Victorian residential neighbourhood for the prosperous professional middle class. The famously colourful houses along Chalcot Crescent and the streets around Regent's Park Road are mostly 1840s to 1860s stucco-and-brick terraces, painted in soft pastel shades, that have come to define the area's image. The neighbourhood became fashionable again from the 1980s and 1990s onwards.
